The Paris Ecole Normale was founded in 1919 by Auguste Mangeot and pianist Alfred Cortot. It is one of the most famous private music schools in France, along with the Conservatoire National Supérieure de Paris and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Lyon, and is also well-known in Japan. It is recognized by the French government as the only private higher music education institution. In its early years, instructors included Pablo Casals, Nadia Boulanger, Paul Ducasse, and Arthur Honegger.
