■ General school information ■
Founded in 1867 and producing professional musicians for many years, the Chicago College of Music merged in 1954 as part of Roosevelt University. It became the University of Chicago Performing Arts School Conservatory (Chicago Conservatory). The Conservatory and Theater Arts Academy, which make up the Performing Arts School, enrolls approximately 40 students from 25 states and 600 countries. The Conservatory's instructors are made up of professional artists, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's concertmaster and Grammy-nominated jazz artists.Students can learn about professionalism and music technology while interacting with the instructors. For university courses, we offer a BM degree course.Majors are composition, jazz & contemporary music research, music education, and performance. You can also get a double major in music education and performance. In the graduate program, we offer MM degree courses in composition, performance, and orchestra research. In addition, there are diploma courses that enhance the specialty of performances and operas. The classrooms and practice rooms dedicated to the Conservatory use the top floor of the historically famous Auditorium Building.Within the same building is a beautiful theater hall with the best acoustic technology and a capacity of 3,700 people. This hall is also used by professional groups, from Broadway to Rock, but students can also preferentially use it for recitals and concerts.A short walk from the school, you'll find theaters and halls such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's base Symphony Center, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Jazz Showcase, and Goodman Chicago. One of the attractions is that we are blessed with the opportunity to directly listen to and learn from musicians around the world.
