The University of Chicago was founded in 1890 by the American Baptist Education Society and Rockefeller, the oil king.Since then, many Nobel laureates have been produced, and 87 of the award winners have been listed as professors.In addition, it is known as a top-class university due to its abundant financial resources and high level of education, and students and researchers from all over the world are gathering here.The Faculty of Music was established in 1933. In the university course, we offer a BA degree acquisition course by studying composition, music history, music theory, folk musicology, etc.In addition, you can learn analysis, harmony, popular music, computer music, and even world music.The graduate course offers PhD degree courses in composition, folk musicology, music history & music theory.Also, for those who do not need a PhD, we have an MA degree course.
As you can see, academic research is the main focus, but students enjoy playing in private lessons and ensemble activities.In addition, special lectures, coaching and concerts by guest musicians for students are popular.In recent years, we have invited musicians familiar in Japan, such as the Pacifica String Quartet, Eight Blackbird, Newberry Consort, and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.
