Yuri Bondarev was born in St. Petersburg and studied violin at the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin before switching to viola under Tatyana Maslenko at the Leipzig University of Music. He gained orchestral experience with the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester and the Vienna Philharmonic, and has been vice principal of the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra since 2009. He has also performed as a soloist at the Vienna Philharmonic, the Alte Oper Frankfurt and the Tonhalle Düsseldorf. In the 2009/10 season he made his debut at the Leipzig Gewandhaus and the Milan Sala Verdi, performing Béla Bartók's Viola Concerto under the baton of Kirill Stankov. He is also active as a chamber musician, guest conductor of the St. Petersburg Rimsky-Korsakov String Quartet and member of the Hamburg Scardino Quartet. He has performed worldwide, including in Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Sweden, Greece and Japan. He has also given international master classes and taught at the Anton Rubinstein Academy. He recently released his first cd with Italian pianist Gabriele Leporatti on Etera Classics, to great acclaim. The cd features works by Hindemith, Rota, Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff, and is a harmonious blend of contrasting compositions, dark and light.
